BUZET CARNIVAL

The history of Buzet Carnival and the carnival customs of the region is very long. Buzet Carnival is the largest carnival in north Istria.

Time & place

Jan 20 - Feb 14, 2018 at 8:00am - 12:00pm CET

Buzet, 52420, Buzet, Croatia

About the event

A dozen large costumed groups and about a thousand participants from the entire Buzet Region – from Sv. Ivan, Sv. Martin, Roče, Sovinjak, Štrped, Marčenegla, Kodolj, Jedinstvo, Krušvari, and guest groups from Ćićarija, neighbouring towns, and Slovenia will be gathered.

The start of carnival antics is marked by hoisting the carnival flag and the carnival puppet, and with the surrender of the town keys.

Over a thousand costumed participants and dozens of allegorical wagons from the entire Buzet Region, neighbouring towns and municipalities, and Slovenia, will take part in a large parade of masks on Carnival Sunday, February 11, 2018.

The parade will move down II. Istarske Brigade Street to Fontana Square, and will be witnessed by a large audience of visitors from elsewhere in Croatia and abroad. By tradition, carnival events in the Buzet Region are concluded on Ash Wednesday, when the puppet is ceremonially judged and burned, the keys to the town returned to secular authorities, and the carnival flag lowered.

The town of Buzet is a member of the Croatian Federation of Carnival Cities since 2007.
